THREAT Lab

TRAUMA & HEALTH RESEARCH: ETIOLOGY, ASSESSMENT, AND TREATMENT

Welcome

The THREAT lab conducts translational research focused on better understanding and improving treatment for trauma-related disorders. We are proudly located within the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

What is trauma?

Trauma refers to experiences that are overwhelming or deeply distressing and that leave a lasting mark on how a person thinks, feels, and functions. Reactions may include fear, helplessness, confusion, or detachment, and these responses can persist long after the event.

What is posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)?

PTSD is a mental health condition that can occur after someone experiences or witnesses a traumatic event, such as violence, an accident, or a natural disaster. PTSD involves symptoms like unwanted memories or flashbacks, avoiding reminders of the trauma, negative thoughts or feelings, and feeling constantly on edge. These symptoms can last for weeks, months, or even longer, and may interfere with daily life.

What else do we study?

Traumatic experiences can result in a range of mental health difficulties, health problems, and other types of impairment. THREAT Lab seeks to develop and refine prevention and intervention methods for trauma-related difficulties including interpersonal impairment, risky behaviors, anxiety, depression, and suicide risk.
